Less than on week after Fern Hollow Bridge collapsed into Frick Park, work has begun to remove the vehicles from the debris, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety.
The first vehicle removed from the debris was the PAT bus, which was removed with the help of the Port Authority, according a statement by Pittsburgh Public Safety.
Before that could happen, "Pittsburgh HazMat developed an innovative plan to pump approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel from the bus to prepare it for the lift," PPS said.
Ladders were lashed together and personnel used belay lines for safety while accessing the bus, according to the statement by PPS.
The angle of the bus "added an extra challenge in offloading the fuel, which was transferred into barrels suspended by a crane," officials said.
"Allegheny Crane & Rigging built the massive crane with precise specifications for the complex lift," PPS said.
The personnel who completed the removal and secured the area were from Pittsburgh Bureau of EMS, Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire, Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, and Pittsburgh Emergency Management & Homeland Security, according to officials.
On-lookers watched the removal via the newly minted "observation area."
